Domotics, self-diagnosis, the traditional hospital declining

Health care, because it is close to our root values and everyone needs it for oneself or beloved ones, is complex and financially consuming, hence a highly political domain. Every part of health care also has its own issues, with youth or the elderly care, pharmaceuticals or hospitals. The main issue is becoming more and more clear in 2016. Google is busy developing a glucose measuring contact lens, heart attack warning systems are already available and Fever Scout digitally measures body temperatures that are instantly available on line.

“The expected mass migration in diagnosis will have tremendous consequences for hospitals. The clinics are full of equipment for measuring and diagnosis that won’t be necessary anymore in a short while. How many hospitals will be empty in about ten years? The banks also wonder. It is one of the reasons why hospitals have so much trouble getting their new real estate financed. Credit and financial institutions have doubts about the phenomenon of a hospital, an organization housing all kinds of  ventures conducting medical operations. How well are these buildings equipped against the trend that the patient wants and gets his care close to home? Consultants predict that within 25 years 40% of the hospitals remain empty. In the hospital of the future, only complex operations will be conducted. Many of the treatments move to the GP and diagnosis and simple curements can take place at home.”*

Our service: next to the professional playing field, the health care sector also has to deal with the meaning that public opinion attributes to its conduct, what issues develop and the political decision making on the distribution of the means, as well as what is considered to be indispensable. Hospitals have to hop on the bus of the app-era that is developing rapidly, as Uber, the taxi service, and Airbnb, the local hospitality business, are showing.

Indispensable care

Health care is a complex domain. Much is possible and we want more. The political format is mostly financial with an important focus on what people have to pay for on an individual basis and what is collectively financed. Some care domains, such as fysiotherapy, predental help and home care can prove that they prevent more expensive care. Others, such as medicines and long term care tend to argue along the lines of solidarity. Narrative analysis is needed to know who are considered to be the problem creators, the victims and the problem solvers.

In order to be able to join the trend in the app-era, all health care institutions and hospitals will have to invest in their own digital platforms, before other parties run away with the mediating position.
